Nestled in the picturesque harbour of Conception, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Black Hen Studio showcases the work of award-winning craft artists Michael Harlick and Susan Furneaux.
Inspired by the natural history of Newfoundland and Labrador, their practice, aesthetic and studio philosophy are firmly rooted in the Arts and Craft movement. Michael works in metal, creating hand-forged knives and fine silver jewellery adorned with wood and local semi-precious stones. With an emphasis on hand embroidery and natural dyeing, Susan creates textiles adorned with silk, wool and local materials.
Visiting the Avalon Peninsula? We offer drop-in textile workshops and blacksmith demonstrations for groups of 2 to 15. These two hour workshops include natural dye, wet felting and hand embroidery. Depending on season, natural dye workshop content can range from indigenous dye plants to our own homegrown Japanese indigo.
A selection of product line; each piece is created one-at-a-time in studio. Labradorite is locally sourced from an island in northern Labrador; Michael selects each piece for fire and colour then hand cuts and polishes to fit the setting. We generally have this work in stock.
