In the 19th century, the Oselvaren was the dominant type of small boat along the entire Hordaland coast, and after the great upheaval in the fishing industry at the turn of the last century, when fishermen started to use larger boats in which they installed engines, only Os and Strandebarm survived as boat-building villages in Hordaland. The Oselvaren is an elegant rowing boat, meticulously built with thinner planks and only three lanes. It is known as a particularly light and fast rowing boat, and also as being very safe. Oselvarverkstaden was founded in 1997 to preserve the knowledge and skills needed to build this traditional boat.
